(NOTE: This letter was received in Seville on 12 December 1972).
Our Sir:
It is hardly many days since my brothers posted in your nation sent you from Madrid, in the context of a letter sent to your brother Mr Rafael Farriols Calvo, a respectful greeting for you. Allow us to repeat it today with genuine devotion and esteem.
I set out below the reason for this brief letter:
We would feel happy if you made an effort to carry out your investigations in Albacete with more discretion. We know that they have reached a small sector of the population, which is already aware of some ambiguous aspects of this Story.
My brothers retain great sympathy and respect for that great lady, your sister of Spain: Señora Margarita Ruiz de Lihori, who had the kindness to be hospitable to my people:
Allow us, Mr Ignacio, to assure you that the versions circulated in your nation about this lady are largely inaccurate and painfully unjust. We will accept the responsibility that concerns us, which consists in having created a rarefied and ambiguous atmosphere because of our presence. You well know that any chain of events, when surrounded by enigmatic and strange factors, acquires new dimensions, which laymen in the subject strive almost unconsciously to exaggerate, sometimes making them appear immoral and even criminal.
We would wish to provide you some day with proofs that none of those who took part in those proceedings acted in violation of the laws of your respectable nation or was driven by dishonest motives.
That is why it would pain us if new investigations of yours were to open new wounds, or new fallacious reasons for discrediting your sister, now deceased.
Do not consider, Mr Ignacio Darnaude, our respectful request as an exhortation to stop such studies. You are a free human and you know that nobody can or should coerce you in this sense. But: Do you not consider reasonable our plea that such analyses be carried out in such a way that they do not reach poorly prepared brothers of yours who might pervert such information, even without malice?
We are encouraged to address you by the fact that your personality shows the features of a prudent and cautious human. We know that you have on more than one occasion expressed serious doubts about our identity, and that constitutes a wise attitude towards unknown beings such as we are.
Do you not think that it can in no way benefit your brothers to give excessive publicity to us?
Whatever judgement you may form of us as a group claiming to come from the planet Ummo, you will agree without hesitation on the inadvisability of paying us excessive attention.
Let us see why:
If, as some brothers of yours think, my brothers and I belong to some terrestrial human group, to some more or less esoteric organisation, moved by springs of a financial, political, religious or philosophical nature towards objectives of doubtful morality and of a military, proselytising, criminal, subversive... nature, You yourself will understand that in no case would it be advisable to create an exaggerated alarmism and arouse in public opinion an interest of which the first beneficiary would be that hypothetical organisation. On the contrary, it would be necessary to denounce us to the authorities of your respective nations, to the international police organisations, so that they might abort these presumed antisocial activities.
If, as other brothers suspect, we were some sect or society using the fallacious name of Ummo to mask activities of a scientific nature, of sociological research, etcetera, without the slightest unethical intention, do you not think that generating excessive publicity around us might disturb its noble aims?
If we are a small group of pranksters scattered over various nations, generating propaganda around us of our fraudulent identity would amount to becoming accomplices in such a deception.
And if, finally, as we formally assert, since only we know the authenticity and ethical character of our testimony, we are travellers from our planet, then the reasons for keeping reserve and caution in statements that may leak to the social macro-groups of Earth are obvious, and we need not list them for you,
Among the few citizens of Spain who know this matter, so unclear to you, we see in you the prudently sceptical human with boundless investigative eagerness. Any hypothesis you may formulate about us -pejorative or admiring- must be consistent with the reasoning set out above: which is summed up in agreeing, on the one hand, that it is inappropriate to give us excessive credit and, on the other, in agreeing between you and your brothers not to develop excessive publicity. We think you could act as a prudent moderator of some enthusiastic brothers of yours in Spain, making them see the need to show themselves reticent towards us.
Our declared objective today is that you should be the depositaries of some information about the beings of Ummo which one day you will be able to verify, without these painful and unpleasant doubts. That is why we cannot avoid contact with you, which would be the best solution for curbing all the risks we are setting out for you.
In return, be patient and do not give us credit. We believe that the most prudent attitude is that of the human who keeps our information and at the same time openly sets out a serious criticism of our testimonial account, refusing in principle, without further proof, to accept our inevitable assertions. Hundreds of times we have repeated this advice in various languages, and Canadians and Spaniards have been those who have paid least heed to it.
Receive, Mr Ignacio, our most cordial greetings.
